Use I-75 at 9 Mile? Look out!!

November 17, 2009

Local 4 Traffic blog by: Lauren Podell

The bulk of the 9 mile overpass re-construction begins tonight! MDOT teased us the past few weeks with a lane closure here and there but now it’s time to brace ourselves for freeway closures. Fortunately for you and me, they are nightly closure, but could create problems for evening drivers & early risers!

What it looks like now...

The shutdowns this week are so crews can lay steel beams for the replacement bridge. “The fact that we’re already setting bridge beams in mid-November shows we’re serious about getting this bridge open by the end of the calendar year,” Morosi said.

So here is the complete schedule from The Michigan Department of Transportation:

TONIGHT 8PM – 5AM

  • All lanes of Southbound I-75 at 9 Mile CLOSE
  • An additional northbound lane during those hours.

WEDNESDAY 8PM – 5AM

  • All lanes of Southbound I-75 at 9 Mile CLOSE
  • An additional northbound lane during those hours.

THURSDAY 9PM – 5AM

  • All lanes of Northbound I-75 at 9 Mile

DETOURS:

  • Traffic is to be detoured using ramps at 9 Mile and the freeway’s service drive.
  • Drivers should consider alternates such as Woodward or John R

The tanker explosion!

The bridge reconstruction was ordered after a tanker caught fire under the 9 Mile Road bridge during a three-car collision in July. Bridge replacement work is expected to be finished in December. The I-75 freeway reconstruction is scheduled to begin in April and be completed in July 2010.

Postponed construction in Warren is back on tonight

April 1, 2009

heather-zara-headshotLocal 4 Blog by Heather Zara

Good Wednesday morning to you. Mound Road is scheduled to close over I-696 for a period of 8 weeks… and it starts tonight.

The closure is part of the existing road work currently in place to improve bridge conditions along I-696 in Macomb County.

Mound Road will completely close in both directions tonight at 10pm and won’t reopen until early June. Use Ryan Road or Van Dyke Avenue to get around this. Dequindre Road also works well as an alternate.

As for other midday construction around town:

Big Beaver at I-75 in Troy

  • Right lane blocked from 9am-3pm today

Southbound I-75 at Ortonville

  • Left lane blocked from 9am-3pm today

Northbound I-75 at University

  • Left lane blocked until 3pm Friday

No full FREEWAY closures this weekend, but still construction

March 27, 2009

heather-zara-headshot18Local 4 Blog by Heather Zara

Happy Friday! The good news is that you won’t have to completely dodge a freeway this weekend because none of them are completely shutting down.  That’s not the case on a busy stretch of main roads in Dearborn though. Here’s a look at the scheduled weekend construction by county.

Wayne County

Ford Road (M-153) in Dearborn will be closed at Evergreen in both directions

  • 8pm tonight (Friday)-5am Monday
  • Traffic will be routed to the Evergreen exit and entrance ramps in each direction.
  • At 5am Monday, the following ramp closures will be in place: EB Ford to SB Evergreen and SB Evergreen to EB Ford. Detours posted through May
  • At 5 am Monday, expect the following lane restrictions: one lane block on Ford Rd. at Evergreen in both directions until mid-summer

Oakland County

EB I-696 at Couzens Avenue

  • Right lane blocked today (Friday) from 1-3pm
  • Expect minor delays

I-696/I-75 Ramps

  • 6am-9am Saturday: EB I-696 to NB and SB I-75 will close
  • 9am-12pm Saturday: WB I-696 to NB and SB I-75 will close
  • 6am-9am Sunday: NB I-75 to EB and WB I-696 will close
  • 9am-12pm Sunday: SB I-75 to EB and WB I-696 will close
  • Detours will be posted but you can use Woodward as an alternate

Macomb County

I-696 between Hayes and Gratiot

  • 8pm tonight (Friday) until 5am Monday
  • 2 right lanes will be blocked in both directions

I-696 between Van Dyke and Dequindre

  • 8pm tonight (Friday) until 5am Monday
  • 2 right lanes will be blocked in both directions

*Try using 10 or 12 Mile Road instead of I-696 to avoid probable congestion this weekend

That’s all folks! Not that bad, right? Have a great weekend-see you back here bright and early on Monday and on Local 4 News Morning, starting at 5am. Construction in Detroit and Dearborn

March 23, 2009

heather-zara-headshot15Local 4 Blog by Heather Zara

Good Monday Morning. All of the closures from this weekend are officially behind us, but the road work is just begining here in the Detroit area. In Detroit, the lane closures along I-75 are coming to an end today, but not before a couple of slowdowns… and inn Dearborn you can expect lane and ramp closures for the months ahead.

DEARBORN

Lane closures: Today at 9am through mid-April

  • Eastbound US-12 (Michigan Avenue) will be reduced to 3 lanes between Elm Street and M-39 (Southfield Freeway).
  • Westbound US-12 (Michigan Avenue) will be reduced to 3 lanes between American Drive and Evergreen Road.

Ramp closures: Today at 9am through early November

  • The EB US-12 ramp to northbound Evergreen Road will be closed
  • The southbound Evergreen Road ramp to EB US-12 will be closed
  • Use Outer Drive or Ford Road to get around ramp closures

DETROIT

Midday construction today from 9:30am-2pm

  • Southbound I-75 between I-94 and Warren Avenue will be down to just one lane
  • ALL lanes will reopen by 2pm this afternoon
  • Use M-8 The Davison and M-10 The Lodge to avoid the congestion
  • (This stretch is currently down to 2 lanes until 9:30am)
Have a great day and see you on Local 4 News Morning tomorrow starting at 5am. Don’t forget to check us out on Twitter @HeatherZara and @Local4News.
Oh, and GO GREEN!  😉

Please blame it on Friday the 13th… I promise I have nothing to do with this construction!

March 13, 2009

heather-zara-headshot10Local 4 Blog by Heather Zara

Good morning again. Yes, it is yet another Friday the 13th. Didn’t this just happen a month ago? Nevertheless, we have a lot of construction to talk about. There will be 2 full closures across metro-Detroit this weekend. It’s not my fault I promise. Blame it on this unlucky day-Friday the 13th. So, there’s good news and there’s bad news.

Let’s start with the good news first-

  • ALL lanes of northbound I-75 are now open again between Mack and I-94.
  • Expect the southbound side of I-75 to be cleared on March 23rd. For now, only 2 lanes get by between I-94 and Mack.

Alright, are you ready for the bad news? Well I’ll be honest with you; it’s going to be annoying-

Through Warren:

I-696 is scheduled to close in both directions between Dequindre and Van Dyke

  • 8pm tonight until 5am Monday
  • You will be automatically be redirected to the I-696 Service Drive
  • Use the Mile roads instead to avoid the expected congestion-10 Mile and 12 Mile work well and keep you close to I-696.
  • This is to remove the Sherwood Road overpass above I-696 along with work involving the I-696/Mound interchange project

Through Washington Township:

M-53 at 26 Mile will close in both directions this weekend

  • 11pm tonight through 5am Monday
  • All traffic will use the 26 Mile Road exit and entrance ramps to get around this
  • 26 Mile Road over M-53 will also close until early September-Detours will be posted for local traffic
  • This is the first step of the $40 Million project dedicated to repairing a 9 mile stretch of M-53-All road work is expected to last through November

Okay, now breathe.

Feel better? Good. Don’t let the construction get you down. Have a great weekend and see you on Local 4 News Morning starting at 5am on Monday.
